Cro-A-Ti-A Day 7

 Trogir and Dan-O Pizza Night

Yesterday My Friend Jeanie, Bill, bonus grands Gwen and Eleanor Smith (their parents, Tyson and Alison, have gone over to the island of Vis for a couple days to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.  Vis is where at least some scenes of Mama Mia was filmed.) and all the Lummas (Nico, Sibylle, Reike, Henri, Luise and Clara.  Nico is My Friend Jeanie and Bill's exchange son, currently living in Hamburg.  There might be a quiz at the end of the vacay :) ) drove down the coast to Trogir.

Trogir was first established in the 3rd century BC, and has 2300 years of continuous urban tradition.  It has a historical city core, and is the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic complex in Central Europe.  (Thanks to Wikipedia for that information.)

The streets felt particularly narrow here and I took this photo because it was one of the streets that was not crowded with tourists and shops.
This is the Church of St. Lawrence in the central square.  The remainder of the square was populated with restaurants and shops.  Trogir served as the background for the city of Qarth in season 2 of GOT.  I didn't do much GOT investigation here: too hot for most of our crowd and too crowded.
We did have a very nice late lunch in Trogir.  I wanted to show you the result when you ask for a glass with ice in a restaurant here.  I'm guessing when the servers go into the kitchen, they grouse about those damned Americans and their ice.

Back to the house, after a stop at the Plodine, a local grocery store.  It's too bad they don't have a frequent shopper program because one or more of us are at the Plodine or the Tommy Market or the Ribola multiple times a day.  Yesterday My Friend Jeanie and I drove there, first time by ourselves and first time with me driving.  We applauded our success at getting there and back with what we intended to purchase and without getting lost or in an accident.  I did find pizza stones, which made the Dan-o very happy as he had already started his dough for Pizza Night.

And what a successful night it was!  Pizzas after pizzas came out of the wood/charcoal fired oven, with first the kids, then the adults lining up for slices.  I believe he put the first pizzas in around 6:30 and the final came out at 9:30, as he could cook only two at a time.  John McManus fueled Dan with gin and tonics, and Marty Luft served as fire stoker and able assistant, so by the time he was done, Dan-o was just a little tipsy but his cooking skills didn't diminish over the evening.

Ready to cut!  Thanks for Marty for suggesting the knife in the photo.

Dan did an absolutely amazing job.  It was a day long endeavor, starting the dough around 11 am and finishing close to 10 pm.  He received a resounding round of applause from all and the promise that he doesn't need to cook again, seeing as he has fulfilled his duties as Breakfast Parent and now Pizza Chef.  I believed I heard some wise-ass ask him if he was making Eggs Benedict from scratch in the morning.

Today the thought is to drive down to Kastle Gomilice, then walk to the final Kastle Sucurac, perhaps having a nice seaside lunch on the way, which will complete the Tour de Kastles for this trip!

I'll finish with this sunset photograph from Tuesday evening.  Hope you're enjoying hearing about this trip!
