Being a Domestic Goddess
Obvi I possess some Domestic Goddess traits otherwise the title of this blog would probably be different.
In teaching my Road Next Taken classes, I've been learning that some people prefer to start with what they don't want or like or prefer rather than what they do. My tendency is to begin with what I like but in this case, I can start with what aspects of Domestic Goddessness are not in my DNA.
1. Cleaning. Never have liked to clean, never will.
2. Picking up. I suppose you could call this an aspect of cleaning. I can leave the dishes on the table and the countertop, the newspaper and clothes on the floor, etc. and not even bat and eye. Now, interesting observation. If Dan leaves his stuff laying around, I am eagle eyed and annoyed.
3. Running errands. I believe I wrote about this previously. Just not fond of it.
4. Shopping except grocery shopping. I have family members who can center their day around shopping (you know who you are and I love you dearly). Just the thought of it is enough to give me the willies. And choosing a place to vacation because there's great shopping there? Not gonna happen.
5. Formal planning for company/guests/visitors. What you see is what you get with me. There's usually a bottle of wine to open and we can scare up something to go with it. There's probably dog hair on most, if not all of the furniture (see number 1 above); if you're staying overnight there will be clean towels and sheets. If I know you're coming, I will do number 1 below.
The opposite side of the Domestic Goddess coin:
1. Cooking. Love looking for recipes, love the planning, love the shopping, love the prep, love the cooking, love the serving and particularly love the eating. Don't love the cleaning up afterward (see number 1 above).
2. Decorating. This might seem rather strange since I don't like shopping but I have discovered I like for the house and the yard to look 'nice.' I'm a fiend for seasonal and holiday decorating. This year we'll have 4 Christmas trees!
Think that's it.
Last night we had my cousins over for dinner. We usually get together at their house or go out to eat. When they come over, they are often part of the Mob Scene that are family gatherings at our home. I decided to go all out because it's been quite a while since we've had anyone over, just for dinner, not associated with a holiday or other family celebration. So I put on my best Domestic Goddess dress and came up with the following.
a. We had appetizers, cheese and crackers. Cheese is not my favorite food so I stretched in choosing a couple cheeses for the cheese board. Everyone ate it so we'll chalk that up to a success.
b. Made a fire in the fireplace. It sputtered a bit but eventually got going.
c. Set the table with china. Over the years Dan has gifted me we different place settings of china. Their common denominator is that they have some blue on them. They sit in the china cabinet and look nice. It was great to set a very pretty table. Even pulled out the Waterford.
d. Dipped into the NY Times recipes and made Pan Roasted Chicken Shawarma, served it with rice, peas and a green salad. For dessert, pulled up a Betty Crocker recipe for a pumpkin cheesecake pie.
No photos of this event? I do have a picture of the pie but for some strange reason, I can't get my phone photos to download onto the computer. Think I'll need to add Tech to the list of Domestic Goddess traits.
