The Cute Boys

On a recent evening, Dan was unavailable to watch television with me.  Since we have an agreement not to cheat  by watching whatever show we're currently streaming without the other, I was scrolling through the cable channels when a movie title caught my eye.

Witness.  Starring the original, one, only and forever Cute Boy, Harrison Ford.  I like virtually everything about that film except the casting of Kelly McGillis as Rachel, the Amish woman Harrison's character John Book falls in love with.  Not a fan.  Plus her choices, as a young widow living in the midde of rural Pennsylvania looking to remarry, were Harrison Ford or Alexander Gudenov.  Really?

Anyhow, as I was watching, I found myself reminiscing about when I was involved with the International Childbirth Education Association as a Board Member and a trainer.  Often I taught groups of 50-200 women and needed a way to bring the group back together when I had thrown out a discussion question for them.  Hence, the Cute Boys.  You'd flash that up on the screen and in short order people cut short  their conversations.  The last thing they anticipated seeing in a session on a childbirth education related topic was a Cute Boy.  Diagram of the pelvic floor?  No doubt.  Kevin Costner?  Not so much.

This is back in the late eighties, early nineties.  You taught with an overhead projector and transparencies.  It was critical that your transparencies were ordered in the file folder so they would correspond with your teaching.  One of the worst things that could happen was you'd drop the file folder shortly before your session began and the transparencies would scatter across the floor.  Not that it ever happened to me.

I think it cost $1.00 to make a color transparency at the local Kinko's so when Dan's office bought a color copier, I was ecstatic!  I'm pretty sure these were the Cute Boys on the transparencies

There's your Starting Line Up of the Cute Boys, the Fab Five.  There may have been a few more but the aging brain doesn't remember them.

Once, in a session, a woman asked if we could vote on the cutest of the Cute Boys.  I recall that we did but not who won.

Another asked me, in all sincerity, if the Cute Boys knew I was doing this, i.e. showing their likenesses to entice women to stop talking and pay attention.  Doubtful.

Ah, the Cute Boys.  I remember them well... and they were community builders, whether they knew it or not.

ps--I still don't believe that Han Solo is dead.

Cooking:
I was sick with some sort of nasty intestinal virus last week so cooking amounted to opening a can of ginger ale.
