Days Four and Five

Let the Photos and the Captions Do the Talking

We arrived in Yellowstone on Saturday, after a very short drive from the Tetons. Both Parks in one trip is eminently doable.  We're adding Glacier at the end of this trip, which requires an at least seven hour drive from Yellowstone, so we'll see how that all works out.  As I've already noted, cell service is virtually non-existent and connecting to WiFi is about as good.  You'd be surprised how much you say, "Oh, let's Google that" only to remember that there's no access to The Google.

Beautiful hike to Storm Point.  We're staying at the Lake Yellowstone Hotel and Cabins--we're in the cabins, a significant step up from the cabin in the Grand Tetons.  Lake Yellowstone is beautiful.

When you read about Yellowstone, inevitably you will be told to expect that you will encounter bison.  On our way to dinner the first night, this giant strolled down the road, passing directly next to our car.
A further down the road, we encountered more bison grazing in Hayden Meadow.  According to a ranger talk we listened to on Tuesday, there are approximately 5100 bison in Yellowstone, the largest public herd in North America, down from over 3 million in the late 1890s.  The US Army decided in its wisdom to kill the bison, thus depriving the indigenous tribes of their primary food source, forcing them from the land so the government could institute homesteading that would encourage development in the West.

Wildflowers are everywhere in Yellowstone, including these expansive meadows we walked through on our Sunday hike.

We also hiked on the North and South Rims of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.  Both the Upper and Lower Falls were running at full force into the Yellowstone River.

Sunday evening we had dinner at the iconic Old Faithful Inn, built in 1904.  After dinner, we sat out on the second floor deck and watched Old Faithful erupt.  I posted video on my Facebook page, if you're interested.

I could go on and on but it took nearly twenty minutes for these photos to download so we're going to call it a night.  Thanks for traveling along!
