The Look
A question a la Sex and the City...
If perception is reality, and your perception doesn't match the rest of the world's perception, then whose perception is reality?
Here's how I perceive myself:
If perception is reality, and your perception doesn't match the rest of the world's perception, then whose perception is reality?
Here's how I perceive myself:
Kim Basinger, 1998 Academy Awards
I thought she looked stunning in that gown and have asked my children to use this photo next to my obituary.
Given what transpired this afternoon, this image is probably much closer to reality:
Found after Googling old decrepit woman
Because at the liquor store, someone who looked like this:
Found after Googling tattooed woman
Kindly (giving her the benefit of the doubt) said she would call for a carryout, after packing the wine I purchased into a carton. I replied, "No, thanks, I'll carry it myself" and then she shot me: THE LOOK.
Found after Googling expression of disbelief
I mean, it was blatant. You are too old to be carrying twelve bottles of wine, old woman! screeched THE LOOK.
Naturally, I was taken aback because my reality does not match with THE LOOK (see the first photo if you have any doubts). Yes, I do still think I'm all that and a bag of chips and yes, catching sight of my reflection does immediately albeit briefly disabuse me of that notion.
Because you know what? I am all that and a bag of chips. Perhaps the larger bag of chips and perhaps the ones with the ripples, but damn! I do not warrant THE LOOK. None of us do.
So back to the question: whose perception is reality? In this case, I'm going with mine. I encourage you to do the same. If in your head you believe you look like Kim Basinger at the 1998 Academy Awards (where she won for her performance in LA Confidential and she looked fabulous throughout the film), then who is anyone to look at you as if you're not?
Eat those chips, girlfriend. Wear them proudly.
